In 1972, Archie Griffin became a halfback for the Ohio State Buckeyes as a freshman and led the team with 867 rushing yards. As each year came to pass, however, his numbers increased: he rushed 1,428 yards as a sophomore, 1,620 as a junior and 1,357 as a senior, making him the only back to lead the Big Ten Conference in rushing for three years in a row. Overall, Griffin rushed for 5,589 yards on 924 carriers, had 6,559 all-purpose yards and scored 26 touchdowns in his four seasons with Ohio State University. He was the Heisman Trophy Winner from '74-'75, and by former head Buckeyes Coach Woody Hayes, he was "a better young man than he was a football player, but he was the best football player I've ever seen."
